South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has tested B30 biofuel blend on its vessel in Busan port.

The trial was conducted on its 6,400-TEU containership, HMM Tacoma, during its refuelling in the Port of Busan. The vessel operates in India, the Far East, and Latin America.

The B30 blend was supplied by South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex. HMM said the blend contained 30% biofuel components derived from used cooking oil and 70% HSFO.

This blend resulted in a 24% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) compared to conventional fuels, HMM claimed.

“HMM plans to expand the use of biofuel gradually, reaching about 5-10% of annual fuel consumption,” it said.

Earlier this year, the South Korean shipping giant signed newbuilding contracts for nine methanol-powered containerships. HMM is also investigating the feasibility of using an onboard carbon capture system and ammonia to further reduce its carbon footprint.
