The shore power system allowed the LNG-capable Höegh Starlight to switch off its onboard engines while at berth and reduce emissions.

This was the company’s “first successful connection” to shore power in Europe, it said.

The EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requires major coastal and inland ports within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) to provide shore power for container and passenger ships by the end of 2029.

FuelEU Maritime will also require container and passenger ships over 5,000 GT to use shore power or another zero-emission technology while at berth at covered TEN-T ports from 2030.
