The vessel recently crossed the New Navigational Lock at Farakka in West Bengal and is sailing towards Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, according to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

The catamaran passenger vessel has been build by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

IWAI has not shared details on whether the ferry will operate on green hydrogen or where the hydrogen will be sourced from.

Fuel cells powered by hydrogen can help to decarbonise smaller vessels and boats. But fuel cells have not yet achieved a technological breakthrough to power large ocean-going vessels.
