Hyundai Heavy Industries' 100% hydrogen engine closer to becoming a reality by 2025
South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has unveiled a 1.5-megawatt (MW) hybrid engine that uses a mix of LNG-hydrogen and diesel fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“It can be said that it is the first step of the hydrogen engine,” says HHI.
It plans to develop engine technology that enables more hydrogen to be used in the LNG-hydrogen blend by 2023. Additionally, the company intends to build a 100% hydrogen-powered engine by 2025.
During the transportation of liquefied hydrogen, the hydrogen boil-off gas generated during the transport process is used as fuel to minimize hydrogen loss, says HHI.
