An FSRU is a vessel that can transport, store and re-gasify ammonia onboard. As the ammonia leaves the production area, it is transported on the floating vessel in a liquid state and stored on board. The ammonia is then heated onboard and converted back into a gas, which is then delivered to onshore customers via a pipeline.
Hyundai Heavy Industries and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering are subsidiaries of the South Korean shipping conglomerate Hyundai Heavy Industries Group.
The vessel design and re-gasification system will be developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries. Lloyd’s Register will be the classification society for the vessel concept.
“As the transition to eco-friendly energy accelerates, this joint development will receive market attention as a technical guarantee for the important supply infrastructure of the ammonia value chain,” says Park Seong-gu, Far East Asia representative of Lloyd's Register.
Earlier this year, Japanese shipping majors Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines conducted a concept study on floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) for ammonia fuel.
