The joint venture will focus on developing safe and efficient infrastructure for ammonia storage and handling. The planned ammonia terminal is designed to receive, and store imported ammonia in Japan and support the development of a stable domestic ammonia supply system.

The partnership aims to establish a broader ammonia supply chain in Japan and promote the diverse applications of ammonia.

The companies plan to develop an efficient ammonia distribution system by using the terminal as a “hub function for marine transportation.”

The ammonia terminal is expected to begin operations in 2030.

“Currently, Vopak has six ammonia storage locations within its global network,” said Vopak Japan’s managing director, Lars Schaumann.
