IMO plans evacuation of 11,000 stranded seafarers following US-Iran agreement

Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has unveiled plans to launch an operation aimed at evacuating more than 11,000 seafarers who remain stranded across the region.IMAGE: The International Maritime Organisation's headquarters in London. The initiative will be undertaken through coordinated efforts involving Iran, Oman, other regional coastal states, the US, and stakeholders from across the maritime industry.

“We have secured the necessary safety guarantees and have thoroughly verified the conditions for safe navigation to support these operations. We remain fully committed to ensuring the safety of seafarers and the continuity of global trade,” the IMO Secretary-General added.

While the announcement confirms the start of preparations for the evacuation effort, the IMO has yet to release further information on how the operation will be carried out or when it is expected to begin.
