The framework provides a baseline for developing training programmes to ensure crews are prepared for the operational challenges of new energy sources, the IMO said.

Specific training modules for fuels such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, LPG, as well as batteries and fuel cells, are currently under development.

The detailed guidelines are expected to be reviewed at the IMO’s Human Element, Training, and Watchkeeping sub-committee meeting in February 2026.

Once finalized, they will state the mandatory training requirements in the revised 1978 STCW Convention Code, which is currently being updated to reflect decarbonization and digitalization trends in shipping.
