Seven Japanese companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly design and develop liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers and ammonia-capable vessels.

The consortium consists of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Imabari Shipbuilding, Nihon Shipyard, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and Japan Marine United.
Initial vessel designs will be developed by MILES, the design and engineering joint venture between Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Imabari Shipbuilding.
These baseline designs will then be supplied to other domestic shipyards, which will carry out the functional and production design based on the shared templates.
Shipping companies K Line, MOL and NYK Line will place orders for the vessels once the designs are finalised. Nihon Shipyard and Japan Marine United will develop the operational guidelines and standards to support deployment.
