China's Jiangnan Shipyard and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC) have commenced construction of the first Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) for Jaldhi Overseas Pte.
The 230-metre vessel is equipped with an LPG dual-fuel main engine and is based on Jiangnan's independently developed Panda 93A design, a 93,000-cbm VLAC.
The shipyard has increased the design's cargo capacity to 95,000 cbm by adding two 1,000-cbm deck tanks.
DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight data shows there are 168 LPG-fuelled vessels currently in operation, and 34 on order. The orderbook is projected to expand to 148 vessels by 2030.
Of these LPG-fuelled vessels, 10 LPG/ammonia carriers are currently in operation, with another 68 vessels on order.
Jiangnan said the vessel is currently the world's largest ammonia carrier and has been designed to meet growing demand for long-distance transportation of green ammonia
