Kawasaki’s dual-fuel hydrogen engine gets ClassNK approval
A dual-fuel hydrogen-fuel oil engine designed by Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has been approved in principle by shipping classification society ClassNK.

KHI will install the dual-fuel generator engine on a liquefied hydrogen carrier. KHI plans to use hydrogen boil-off gas as a main fuel that "evaporates naturally from the ship's liquefied hydrogen cargo tanks."
ClassNK approved KHI's liquid hydrogen carrier design earlier this year, which can carry 160,000 cbm of hydrogen in four 40,000 cbm tanks.
In the meantime, German marine engine maker MAN Energy Solutions is working to create a 100% hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine by the end of the decade.
