Korean Register and Hanwha Ocean collaborate to develop ammonia-capable carrier
Classification society Korean Register (KR) has partnered with South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean to jointly develop an ultra-large ammonia carrier capable of transporting as well as using ammonia as fuel.

The project aims to develop an ultra-large vessel with a capacity of 150,000 cbm, designed to transport large volumes of ammonia, and use ammonia as marine fuel. Given ammonia’s toxic and corrosive nature, the project will prioritise safety in its design.
Under the agreement, Hanwha Ocean will be responsible for the vessel’s basic design, while the KR will evaluate its safety and technical viability based on international regulations and classification standards.
