The company has secured a NOK 344 million ($36 million) grant from Enova, the Norwegian government's clean technology funding body, for the latest order.

The vessels form part of the company's Strandbulk project, which plans to build and commission two 7,700-dwt bulk carriers for short-sea shipping between Norway and Baltic ports.

Each vessel will be equipped with hydrogen fuel cells for main propulsion, an auxiliary diesel generator and shore power capability, the company said, without disclosing the delivery timeline for the vessels.

LH2 Shipping said the vessels will bunker liquid hydrogen in the Norwegian port of Mosjøen, with fuel supplied by Gen2 Energy.

"With expected increases in CO2 emissions charges, the EU ETS, together with the FuelEU Maritime scheme, is expected to minimise the cost gap between traditional and alternative fuels," the company said.
