Lloyd’s Register approves SunRui’s WAPS technology

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has conducted an independent assessment of marine engineering company SunRui’s wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS).

As a part of the review, LR examined and confirmed that the aerodynamic performance and wind load calculations for SunRui's suction sail was in line with recognised industry standards, LR said.

The classification society also verified the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the suction sail technology.

LR’s evaluation showed that a single suction sail can produce up to 260 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust, while three sails working together on a ship can generate a combined 700kN.

“Following its review, LR concluded that the proposed CFD analysis was based on satisfactory standards and could be accepted,” it said.

Interest in WAPSs like suction sails continue to grow as shipowners look to improve efficiency and cut emissions.

These systems actively harness wind power to generate forward thrust, reducing fuel dependency.

SunRui is a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The verification was announced at the ongoing maritime trade fair SMM 2026, in Hamburg, Germany.
