Lloyd’s Register approves Value Maritime’s onboard ship carbon capture system

September 9, 2022

Rotterdam-based shipping technology firm Value Maritime has developed a system that can capture carbon dioxide and filter sulphur and particulates from a ship's exhaust.

Value Maritime says the system can capture up to 40% of carbon emissions, and that this can be scaled up to more than 90% in the future.

The company claims its system will offer a cost-effective alternative to a scrubber.

As the system removes sulphur from a ship’s exhaust gas flow, shipowners can continue using high sulphur fuel instead of costlier low sulphur fuels, it says.

Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) will install the system on two of its medium-range tankers. Value Maritime claims these will be the largest ocean-going vessels in the world to be equipped with the technology.

Carbon capture technology can play key role in reducing emissions from the shipping industry, EPS green shipping manager Mirtcho Spassov says.
