Lomarlabs collaborates with Newlight for hydrogen dual-fuel retrofit
Lomarlabs, a subsidiary of UK-based Lomar Shipping, has partnered with US green tech company Newlight to retrofit conventional diesel engines with Newlight’s dual-fuel technology, enabling them to run on a hydrogen-diesel mix.

Newlight’s dual-fuel retrofit technology integrates hydrogen as a fuel source in existing vessels while enhancing energy efficiency and maintaining operational flexibility. The technology reduces fuel consumption by an average of 20% and significantly cuts greenhouse gas emissions, with workshop trials already demonstrating savings of up to 30%, Lomarlabs claims.
The company aims to replicate these results onboard vessels through the collaboration.
As part of this partnership, Lomarlabs and Newlight will conduct a pilot installation on a Lomar vessel in summer 2025 to collect data and perform harbour and sea trials.
“By retrofitting existing diesel engines to operate on a hydrogen blend, we provide an immediate, scalable solution that cuts emissions without requiring a complete overhaul of the propulsion systems,” said Newlight’s chief executive, Haran Cohen Hillel.
