An SOV is a specialised ship designed to support and maintain offshore wind farms and other marine energy installations.

The newly designed SOV will be capable of running entirely on hydrogen during regular offshore wind farm operations.

It will be powered by proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and equipped with a vacuum-insulated Type C tank to store liquid hydrogen. A Type C tank is a high-pressure container, usually cylindrical or spherical, designed to safely store liquefied gases like hydrogen.

BV granted approval after a detailed design review, which assessed the integration of the liquid hydrogen and fuel cell system.
