The prototype will use French containment system builder GTT’s three-tank concept, according to the joint statement.

GTT claims this will increase LNG cargo capacity and reduce the boil-off rate to 0.080% of tank volume/day compared to 0.085% for LNGCs currently in operation.

As a result of the ship's overall lighter weight, the new vessel will reduce both greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and operating costs, and improve maintenance efficiency, according to Youngkyu Ahn, Samsung Heavy Industries' vice president of shipbuilding and engineering.

The companies, however, did not specify if the LNGC will be powered by LNG.
