Classification society Lloyd's Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiPs) to two methanol dual-fuel vessel designs of Chinese shipyards.

The first AiP was granted to Chinese shipyard Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) for its 81,000 dwt methanol dual-fuelled bulk carrier. The design features methanol propulsion and rotor sail capability, which will help the vessel be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

The classification society also approved the methanol dual-fuel tanker design of CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry and China Ship Design & Research Centre (CSDC). The 110,000-dwt tanker will be fitted with German engine maker MAN ES dual-fuel engines that can run on both methanol and conventional fuel oil.

Methanol “is an excellent alternative marine fuel due to its potential to significantly cut GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and at the same time NOx (nitric oxide), SOx (sulphur oxides) and PM (particulate matter) emissions are very low,” LR claims.

The AiPs were awarded at the Marintec China 2023 event last week.
