HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have received class approval for a 22,000-cbm multi-gas carrier concept vessel.
Apart from liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia, the carrier could also transport carbon dioxide (CO2), which is captured from various sources and stored onboard in liquefied form, said LR.
However, the companies have not yet specified whether the gas carrier will also be powered by an alternative fuel, such as ammonia.
“This multi-gas carrier will be a key piece of infrastructure in the carbon capture and storage value chain, helping remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, supporting the progress to a net zero carbon economy,” said Andy McKeran, chief commercial officer at Lloyd’s Register.
Meanwhile, the design and materials of upgraded storage tanks will increase the size and efficiency of gas carriers, LR added.
