US-based project developer Carbon Sink will set up its first green methanol production facility at ethanol producer Red River Energy’s bioethanol plant in South Dakota, and commercial production from the unit is slated to commence in 2027.
The facility will produce green methanol from green hydrogen using renewable energy and biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from the River Energy bio-ethanol plant.
Maersk and Carbon Sink will subsequently set up green methanol production units across the US.
Maersk’s head of green fuel sourcing Berit Hinnemann says that securing green fuels at large scale in this decade is “critical” to meet the company’s 2040 net-zero target.
According to Maersk, this is the company’s eighth agreement to source green methanol as a bunker fuel for its fleet of 19 methanol-ready dual-fuel container vessels.
Maersk has previously entered partnerships for green fuel supply with the Chinese gas equipment maker CIMC Enric and Green Technology Bank, Danish renewable energy players Orsted and European Energy, Swiss methanol producer Proman, and US-based low-carbon bunker supplier WasteFuel to source 730,000 mt/year of green methanol by 2025.
It has also agreed to source 200,000 mt/year of bio-methanol from Chinese bioenergy enterprise Debo by 2024.
