Danish methanol producer European Energy will inaugurate its Kassø plant today, with first e-methanol supply earmarked for Maersk-owned container ship Laura Maersk, Emil Vikjær-Andresen, head of power-to-X at European Energy said in a social media post.
European Energy has produced an industrial-grade batch of e-methanol at the Kassø facility in Denmark, confirming a fuel purity level above 99.85%.
“The e-methanol is compliant with the methanol industry-standard IMPCA (International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association) specifications,” the company said.
The e-methanol was produced using green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) using solar energy at the Kassø site. Green hydrogen was produced at European Energy's Måde facility by the Port Esbjerg, while the biogenic CO2 was locally sourced from a biogas facility in Tønder.
European Energy is expected to ramp up e-methanol output at its Kassø plant to 42,000 mt/year by the second quarter of this year, with Maersk set to offtake at least 10,000 mt/year of that volume.
The Danish shipowner plans to deploy 19 methanol-capable vessels this year, which includes one retrofitted to run on methanol.
