MAN ES will work with industry leaders and research institutes to develop the concepts, the company says. Besides combustion challenges, the project will focus on addressing engine efficiency, safety issues and integration of the technology in ships to improve the efficiency, performance and durability of hydrogen engines.
Other partners in the project, dubbed “HydroPoLEn”, include cruise operator Carnival Maritime, research institutes WTZ Roßlau, NMA TUM, and components supplier Tenneco.
MAN ES is also looking to retrofit vessels to run on alternative fuels like methanol. In July, they joined a project to convert its medium-speed four-stroke marine engines to run on methanol. According to MAN ES, the project will "enable the retrofitting of entire ship fleets at reasonable economic and technical costs."
