November 1, 2024

The retrofit package has received multiple orders taking the total order count to 95, says German engine maker Man Energy Solutions (MAN ES).

Orders for the engine have been placed at various yards in South Korea, China and Japan.

Introduced in 2021, the dual-fuel methanol engine can power very large container vessels (VLCVs). It is currently undergoing sea trials in China and can run on conventional fuels as well as methanol.

MAN ES claims this is the “world’s first methanol engine retrofit”.

We ultimately expect methanol to figure prominently as a future fuel across all vessel segments,” said Bjarne Foldager, Denmark country manager at MAN ES.

In July, Man ES announced that it will also offer methanol retrofit kits for its four-stroke marine engines from 2025. These engines will be aimed at comparatively smaller vessel segments like cruise ships, ferries and offshore support vessels.
