Bio-methanol is produced using sustainable biomass as a feedstock. Organic biomass is used to produce synthesis gas (syngas), which primarily consists of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2), through a process called gasification. The syngas is upgraded to bio-methanol by further combining it with green hydrogen.

The bio-methanol will be produced using domestic woody biomass and waste, supplied by Japanese waste management firm TRE Holdings.

“Through the supply of green raw materials, the company will contribute to the carbon neutralization of domestic industries and supply domestic carbon neutral fuels such as marine fuel,” MGC said.

The company has not yet shared a construction timeline or other operational details, such as production capacity of the plant.

The proposed project could be Japan’s first commercial scale bio-methanol plant, the Tokyo-listed chemical firm added.
