Land-based tests of the ammonia-fuelled engine and AFSS were conducted in February and verified by compatriot classification society ClassNK.
The onshore testing met classification society rules, and “verified compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) NOx regulations through NOx certification,” clearing the way for commercial supply, Mitsui E&S said.
Ammonia is widely transported as cargo but is still rarely used as a marine fuel due to limited engine technology and its highly toxic and corrosive nature, which demands strict safety measures.
The company plans to expand its onshore testing capacity for the AFSS to cover engines licensed by engineering firms Everllence and WinGD, and to build up mass production of both the engines and the fuel systems to meet expected demand.
