Japanese engine manufacturer Mitsui E&S will expand its ammonia fuel supply system facilities to support land-based testing of ammonia-fuelled marine engines.

The expansion is being undertaken in “preparation for the projected growth in demand for marine engines fuelled by ammonia,” which Mitsui E&S expects to become “a key zero-emission fuel in the future.”

The upgraded facility will incorporate fuel supply technologies developed by TGE Marine Gas Engineering (TGE Marine), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui E&S.

By the end of 2025, Mitsui E&S had completed integrated operational testing of ammonia-fuelled engines and fuel supply systems at its Tamano Works facility, validating the systems' reliability and safety.

The company will now carry out additional land-based integrated trials to further verify the performance of both the engines and fuel supply systems, with the aim of improving reliability, enhancing safety and accelerating the wider adoption of ammonia propulsion technology.

Through its collaboration with TGE Marine, Mitsui E&S also plans to offer integrated marine propulsion systems that combine engines with fuel supply systems, enabling it to serve a broader range of customers in Japan and overseas.

The project is backed by Japan's Zero-Emission Ships Construction Promotion Project, a joint initiative of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
