MOL's book-and-claim scheme gets ClassNK approval

Japanese classification society ClassNK has certified the book-and-claim scheme that shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) plans to launch next year.

Under the scheme, MOL will use LNG and biofuels on its vessels. It will then allocate greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions equivalent to the emissions avoided by using these fuels, compared to conventional fuels across its fleet, to its customers.

The service will allow customers to claim emission reductions even if the vessels carrying their cargo are powered by conventional fuels.

This is the first time that ClassNK has certified a book-and-claim scheme in the Japanese shipping industry, MOL said.
