Molslinjen orders two fully-electric ferries from Australia

Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania has secured a contract from Danish ferry operator Molslinjen to design and build two battery-electric ferries.

Although the immediate impact that these small-scale electric vessels will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, these vessels hold significance as they will provide crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.

The 129-metre-long ferries will be powered by battery systems with a capacity of around 45,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and will operate on the Kattegat route between the Danish islands of Jutland and Zealand.

Early-stage construction is set to begin in the coming months, with the first vessel expected to be delivered by late 2027.
