The companies wil invest $1.2 million in the joint venture - Plug Montrose - to install shore power in Montrose.
Montrose, which is located at the mouth of the River South Esk on the northeast coast of Scotland, could become the first Scottish port to offer shore power. The port’s location will allow it to cater specifically to offshore vessels in the North Sea.
Montrose Port Authority’s chief executive Tom Hutchison said that the joint venture to install shore power at the port will help it in “the energy transition” and strengthen its position “as a renewables hub in the region.” Hutchison also believes that “there is an industry demand” for shore power.
Shore power has been gaining traction among port and ship operators as they seek to reduce fossil fuel consumption and emissions while in port.
This month, the US Port of Hueneme received funds worth $10.4 million to install shore power at its North terminal.
