Net-Zero Industry Act will reduce 'administrative burdens' - Danish Shipping

March 17, 2023

The Net-Zero Industry Act will “streamline” permission processes for renewable energy projects, helping the EU to produce enough low-and-zero-carbon marine fuels at reasonable costs, according to Danish Shipping’s chief executive Anne Steffensen.

“We cannot waste more time on bureaucracy,” she said.

The European Commission (EC) tabled a draft proposal for the Net-Zero Industry Act yesterday. It seeks to boost the EU's self-reliance in developing net-zero energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.

The proposed act set a target of injecting 50 million mt/year of carbon dioxide into storage sites across EU countries by 2030. It also introduced a "cross-border, single market approach" for carbon capture and storage.

“In Denmark, we have now proven that offshore storage of CO2 is feasible, so firm Union Single Market targets for CCS are certainly welcome,” said Anne Steffensen.

Industry organisations call for additional measures

Danish Shipping will also suggest removing regulatory barriers to maritime transport in the upcoming dialogue with the Election Commission, according to Steffensen.

Earlier today, the European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) recommended including renewable liquid and gaseous fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) in the Net-Zero Industry Act’s definition of "strategic net-zero technologies" to boost production of affordable low-and-zero carbon marine fuels and technologies.

Environmental non-profit Transport & Environment recommended that the EU should provide financial assistance to scale up production of key green technologies and set a clear strategy on climate finance.
