Allied Green Ammonia is a developer of energy infrastructure projects.

Danish renewable tech firm Topsoe will supply an "undisclosed quantity” of solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC) to produce green hydrogen on the site using water electrolysis and renewable energy. SOECs have “30% greater green-hydrogen output compared to other electrolysis technologies,” according to Topsoe.

Green hydrogen will then be used to produce approximately 900,000 mt/year of green ammonia output using an ammonia loop technology, Topsoe explained.

“We are confident that the geographical location and existing infrastructure in Gove in combination with the most energy-efficient hydrogen and green ammonia technology will lead to the lowest levelized cost of green ammonia production in Australia,” Alfred Benedict, managing director at Allied Green Ammonia said.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2028 or early 2029.

The project will take advantage of the increasing demand for e-fuel production in Australia, Kim Hedegaard, Topsoe’s chief executive of power-to-x said.

The two companies acknowledge that green ammonia is crucial to the decarbonisation of the shipping sector. However, they have not yet specified whether this output will be used as bunker fuel. They have however confirmed that it will be exported to Southeast Asian markets “where demand for e-fuels continues to grow”.
