Six of the vessels will be deployed in the Mediterranean by the company’s subsidiaries Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines, battery manufacturer AYK Energy said. AYK supplied battery systems to the vessels.
The other three vessels will be operated by another Grimaldi unit, Finnlines, in the Baltic Sea. They will operate between Germany and Finland.
The vessels are currently under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) and are scheduled for delivery between 2028-2030.
AYK will supply 2,073 kilowatt-hour marine battery systems to each vessel. The vessels are being built with shore power connections.
There are currently 145 methanol-capable vessels in operations globally, with another 304 on order with deliveries scheduled by 2030, DNV data shows.
More than half of these orders (165) are for container ships, while methanol adoption is relatively modest for RoPax vessels with only 11 on order.
Grimaldi is also positioning itself for future ammonia adoption, with several recent vessels built with options for future conversions to ammonia propulsion.
