A cable layer (cable laying vessel) is a deep-sea vessel designed to lay underwater cables for various purposes, such as telecommunications, electric power transmission, and military applications.
The new vessel, NKT Eleonora, will be equipped with Wärtsilä’s dual-fuel methanol engine and will be able to run on methanol and conventional marine fuels. It will be built by Norwegian ship maker VARD.
NKT Eleonora is “amongst the world’s first cable laying vessels designed to run on methanol,” NKT claims.
The company expects the vessel to be operational from 2027.
