A rotor sail is a modernised form of a Flettner rotor based on the Magnus effect, which creates air pressure to cause spinning. This technology allows a ship's main engine to reduce power during favourable wind conditions, cutting fuel consumption while maintaining operational speed.
Using this technology is expected to “reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by approximately 6-10%,” Norsepower said.
