November 28, 2022

NYK Bulk & Project Carriers, a subsidiary of Japanese shipbuilder Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Chile’s national copper mining company CODELCO have agreed to explore ways to decarbonise copper shipments.

The two companies will evaluate and develop technologies related to low and zero-carbon fuels and investigate the use of low-emission vessels for ocean-going copper transportation, says CODELCO chairman Máximo Pacheco. He adds that the study will help the company to reduce its direct and indirect emissions.

NYK Line is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations. The company ordered two LNG-fuelled coal carriers earlier this month, which are scheduled for delivery in 2025. It is also developing ammonia bunker vessels as well as ammonia carriers.
