NYK Trading unveils charter of biofuel-powered bunker barge

NYK Trading, a subsidiary of Japan-based shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), has announced that it has been running a chartered bunker barge on a biofuel blend since March.

Since March, the vessel No. 28 Seihosan Maru has been operating using a mixture of conventional marine fuel oil and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derived from waste cooking oil, according to NYK Trading. The vessel is operated by tanker operator Asahi Tanker.

This marks the first time that Asahi Tanker has operated a coastal vessel using biofuel.

However, the company did not reveal the exact blend ratio or specify the type of conventional marine fuel used.
