Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), like rigid windsails, have been gaining popularity among shipowners as they look for technologies that can boost vessel performance and reduce fuel consumption.

When installed on ships, WAPSs are expected to be effective in reducing CO2 emissions.

“The implementation of WAPS is advancing as a solution for responding to environmental regulations and reducing fuel expenses,” ClassNK said.

The approval was awarded at the Singapore Maritime Week.

“The certification confirms its feasibility from regulatory and safety perspectives,” the classification society added.
