Swedish engineering company Alfa Laval will supply the system.
The air lubrication system uses “fluidic oscillators to generate an even layer of micro air bubbles across a vessel’s entire flat bottom,” which reduces friction and drag.
By reducing drag, the system cuts fuel consumption by up to 12%, which in turn reduces CO2 emissions, Alfa Laval claims.
Air lubrication system has been seeing rapid uptake among several shipowners and operators globally.
Some of the vessels of Switzerland-headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), German shipping company Grimaldi Group, Chinese shipping company China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have installed or chosen to install air lubrication system this year.
