Onyx Power to build blue hydrogen production plant in Rotterdam

German power company Onyx Power will build a 300,000 mt/yr blue hydrogen production plant at its existing site in the Port of Rotterdam.

“The CO2 produced while making the blue hydrogen would be captured and stored in depleted offshore gas fields,” the company says.

Onyx Power claims this process will save 2.5 million mt/year of CO2 emissions. The project will help to achieve the Netherlands' and EU's decarbonisation targets, it adds.

Blue hydrogen is a low-emission form of hydrogen. It is produced through steam methane reforming of natural gas with carbon capture and storage.
