An agreement was signed between OQ, Omani logistics company Asyad Group, Danish shipping company A.P. Moller – Maersk and Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation at the Oman Green Hydrogen Summit this week.
The consortium will evaluate the feasibility of producing and supplying green ammonia and methanol in the ports of Duqm and Salalah in Oman. The group will also study the possibility of future exports of these fuels.
The project is split into two phases. They will study how suitable existing port infrastructure is, and they will then choose the most commercially viable green fuel for bunkering.
Asyad Group's vice president of sustainability, Essam bin Nasser Al Sheibani, believes that the project will put Oman “on the green fuel map.”
OQ signed inked another agreement at the event with Oman Indian Fertilizer Company to capture and store carbon. The deal includes a feasibility study on blue ammonia production in Sur, Oman, to assess whether CO2 emitted during ammonia production can be captured efficiently.
Oman has heightened its focus on alternative fuels as it pursues a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
In October, Oman revealed its intentions to produce 1 million mt/year of green hydrogen through its hydrogen-focused energy company, Hydrogen Oman’s (HYDROM) project by 2030.
