Changes in Los Angeles emissions from 2020 to 2021:
- 56% increase in diesel particulate matter (DPM)
- 54% increase in nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- 145% increase in sulphur oxides (SOx)
The port authority says that a series of supply chain disruptions and higher congestion of cargo vessels last year led to an increase in emissions in the port.
Meanwhile, the port has set a 2023 target to reduce DPM emissions by 77%, NOx by 59% and SOx by 93% compared to the baseline year of 2005, under the San Pedro Bay clean air action plan (CAAP).
The port authority is currently working to decarbonise ocean shipping between Los Angeles and China, Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka said.
