The facility, also called the Green Cable Project, is located in the Energy Port area within the port. This area handles transportation and storage of various energy products, including petrol and heavy oil, according to the port authority.
As a safety measure, the port's shore power facility uses a system called “overpressure” to “ensure a safe and stable power supply,” the port authority says. This system creates a high air pressure in the connection area which acts as a barrier, preventing highly flammable gases from reaching the power connections.
Last month, the port conducted tests of this shore power supply in the port. A tanker operated by Terntank carried out testing of the onshore power facility.
