Port of HaminaKotka advances shore power project

Finland’s Port of HaminaKotka has contracted Swiss technology company ABB to deliver a shore power system at the port’s Mussalo container terminal.

The agreement covers the design, installation and commissioning of the system, along with the associated infrastructure required to supply shore-based electricity to vessels at berth.

HaminaKotka launched its shore power project last year as part of efforts to meet the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). Under the regulation, major coastal and inland ports on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) must provide onshore power supply (OPS) for container and passenger vessels by the end of 2029. From 2030, FuelEU Maritime will require vessels above 5,000 GT to connect to shore power while berthed at TEN-T ports.

The port secured just over €3 million ($4 million) in EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) to develop shore power infrastructure for container vessels at Mussalo. The programme aims to accelerate the deployment of zero- and low emission transport infrastructure.

Once completed, six berths at the Mussalo terminal will be equipped with shore power connections.
