State-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has taken delivery of a dual-fuel LNG carrier newbuild from South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The LNG carrier, Al Zuwair, will use boil-off LNG for propulsion along with conventional fuels.

It is also fitted with an air lubrication system, which releases bubbles from air release units (ARUs) in the hull. These bubbles form a thin layer of air beneath the vessel, reducing friction and improving fuel efficiency.

Built at HHI’s Ulsan Shipyard, Al Zuwair is the third of 12 new LNG carriers ordered by QatarEnergy. The fleet is being constructed through a joint venture between NYK Line, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, MISC Berhad, and China LNG Shipping (Holdings) Limited. This vessel is the first of the series to be delivered from HHI.

QatarEnergy received its first dual-fuel LNG carrier, Al Tuwar, in April.

Al Zuwair will operate under a time-charter contract with QatarEnergy, though the company has not revealed further details, including its deployment route.
