Rotterdam's conventional bunker fuel sales up 3% in Q2 2024
The port's total conventional bunker fuel sales grew amid higher VLSFO sales in the second quarter of this year, according to bunker sales figures released by the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Total sales of marine distillates, which include marine gasoil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO), dropped by 4% to 369,000 mt in the second quarter of 2024. MGO sales were mostly steady, while MDO sales declined by 10% from the previous quarter.
Total sales of marine fuel oil, which includes VLSFO, HSFO and ULSFO, increased by 4% compared to Q1 2024, backed by a rise in VLSFO sales. But marine fuel oil sales were 12% lower compared to 2 million mt sold in the second quarter of last year.
VLSFO sales jumped by 10% to 747,000 mt in the second quarter of this year. However, the product sales were 18% lower compared to 906,000 mt sold in the second quarter of 2023.
HSFO emerged as the most sought-after bunker fuel grade in Rotterdam for the second consecutive quarter. Around 825,000 mt of HSFO was sold in the second quarter of 2024, largely unchanged from the previous quarter. The grade recorded a slight 3% drop compared to the same period in 2023.
ULSFO sales declined by 4% to 170,000 mt from the previous quarter.
Rotterdam’s total conventional bunker sales in the second quarter of this year were about 11% lower compared to the second quarter of 2023.
