The expansion takes Gate Terminal’s total LNG throughput capacity to 20 billion cbm/year. Gate is jointly owned by gas infrastructure companies Gasunie and Vopak.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is also constructing a fourth jetty at the terminal, expected to begin small-scale ship loading and LNG bunkering operations by the end of 2028. Gate is assessing the potential construction of a fifth jetty based on market demand.

The expanded terminal will strengthen Rotterdam’s ability to receive LNG from multiple global sources, including the US, Norway and the Middle East.

Gate serves as an LNG hub, with imported cargoes either reloaded onto smaller tankers for re-export, converted to gas and supplied to Europe’s pipeline network, or transported by truck to smaller, standalone gas networks across Europe. LNG is also supplied as a marine fuel to vessels calling at the Port of Rotterdam.

The terminal supports both LNG import and re-export, as well as loading operations for bunker vessels and LNG trucks.
