Rotterdam's Q3 biofuel sales fall behind Singapore

Bio-blended bunker sales in Rotterdam plunged by 41% in Q3 2024 compared to the previous quarter, while LNG sales dipped by 9%.


Changes in Rotterdam alternative fuel sales between Q2 and Q3 2024

  • Total bio-blended bunker sales down 97,000 mt to 137,000 mt
  • Total LNG sales down 9,000 mt to 89,000 mt


About 137,000 mt of bio-blended bunkers were sold in Rotterdam in Q3 2024, which is 40% lower compared to 227,000 mt sold in Singapore in the same period.

Rotterdam’s biofuel sales in Q3 2024 marked the lowest since Q4 2021, when 127,000 mt was sold.

Bio-VLSFO sales touched 52,000 mt in Q3 2024, significantly down by 67% from the previous quarter. The grade has been the most sought-after bio-blend, accounting for 61% of Rotterdam's total biofuel sales volume in the first nine months of 2024. Bio-HSFO ranked second with 20% of the biofuel volumes sold, while bio-ULSFO came in third at 13%.

Bio-MGO witnessed higher sales in Q3 2024, with 10,000 mt sold, a notable uptick from 4,300 mt sold in the previous quarter.

Around 2,000 mt of bio-methanol was sold in the third quarter of the year, a record high since Rotterdam started publishing methanol sales data in 2021.

Rotterdam’s LNG bunker sales declined by 9% in Q3 2024, with around 89,000 mt sold. Rotterdam’s Q3 LNG bunker sales were 29% lower than the 126,000 mt sold in Singapore during the same period.
