The company plans to install shore power systems at the first berths in 2026. RWG will design, finance and build the shore-based power systems. By installing shore power systems, ships berthed at the Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) will reduce CO2 emissions while at port and minimise noise pollution.

“Ships ‘plugged in’ when berthed ensure better air quality and a reduction in noise pollution,” Port of Rotterdam Authority's chief executive Boudewijn Siemons said.

According to FuelEU Maritime regulations, all container ships, cruise and passenger ships above 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) must use shore power while in EU ports starting from 1 January 2030.
