SAAM Towage launched fully electric tug in Turkey

Canadian towage service provider SAAM Towage and Chilean energy company Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (Enap) have jointly launched a fully electric tugboat at the Sanmar shipyard in Tuzla Bay, Istanbul.

The 25-meter-long tug is scheduled to arrive in Chile in the first half of 2025, after completing sea trials to verify its performance, the towage company said.

It is the third vessel in the company's fully electric fleet.

Although the immediate impact that this small-scale electric vessel will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the vessel holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.
